Some intriguing facts:The all-black 332nd Fighter Group (The Tuskegee Airmen) escorted more than 200 bombing missions over Germany without the loss of a single bomber to enemy fighters. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, Mess Attendant 2nd class Dorie Miller on the battleship West Virginia was told to go below deck, to get out of harm's way. Miller stayed topside, pulling many of his wounded shipmates to safety and then, wielding weaponry he hadn't been trained to use, he shot down at least two Japanese planes. At Bastogne, at the Battle of the Bulge, half the artillery battalions surrounded by the Germans were black. An all-black unit of Marines served at Iwo Jima. Come visit us for more!! The Purpose of this museumThis museum is the only one of its kind in the U.S. The museum was created not to glorify war but to document it -- in particular to honor the long-ignored role of African-Americans in the largest worldwide conflict of human history.
The Museum's goal is to enlighten visitorsTo enlighten visitors about the relatively unknown and unappreciated contribution of the 1.1 million African-Americans who served in the U.S. military in World War II. More than a collection and display of objects, the museum is a center for ongoing teaching and research on this broad subject. |
